At least 206 people have been killed and hundreds have been wounded in a series of powerful explosions in a weapons depot in the Republic of the Congo, an official says.
The blasts occurred in the capital Brazzaville on Sunday morning.
“According to sources at the central hospital we’re talking of around 206 dead and many injured,” Betu Bangana, head of protocol in the president’s office in Brazzaville, told Reuters.
“Some people are still (trapped) in their houses… They’re saying the entire neighborhood of Mpila has been destroyed,” Bangana added.
The death toll is expected to rise due to the intensity of the blasts.
The explosions came from the north of the capital, witnesses said. The incident also prompted some residents of the northern part of the city to flee south.
“The first explosion there cause cracks in our windows here and the second explosion broke all the windows of the shop, but we don’t know what happened,” a shop owner said.
There was no official comment from the government on the cause of the explosions as of yet. CNN says that the explosions started at an ammunition depot.
