Now it looks like more gravel has fallen into the machinery for Sweden’s attempt to join NATO. Hungarian Speaker László Kövér says that it is “not certain” that the Hungarian parliament must approve Sweden’s application for it to become valid.
The latest statement from Hungary has created uncertainty about the process for Sweden’s membership in NATO.
Over the weekend, Hungarian Speaker László Kövér said that it is possible that the parliament’s approval is not necessary for Sweden to have its membership in NATO confirmed.
Last week, an old video from UR, which claimed that democracy was on the decline in Hungary, received a lot of attention in the Hungarian media.
The Hungarian government sent a letter to Sweden’s foreign minister Tobias Billström (M), expressing that the video could affect Sweden’s chances of becoming a member of NATO.
Currently, only Hungary and Turkey have not yet approved Sweden’s membership in NATO.
