Asteroid 9 times size of ocean liner approaches Earth
The 1998 QE2 asteroid has the physical mass to potentially deliver life on Earth a knockout punch, being 2.7km in length. It is to buzz our planet on May 31, aweing the stargazing community.
Officially known as Asteroid 1998 QE2, the ‘minor planet’, as astronomers refer to these space objects, is about nine times the length of its name-sharing ocean liner, Queen Elizabeth 2.
The incoming space...
Mars One colonization scheme submits 78,000 applications
Some 78,000 people from 120 countries have applied for a one-way trip project of settlement in the Red Planet run by the Dutch nonprofit company Mars One.
The company plans to send a few willing pioneers on a one-way trip, with no chance of returning to Earth.
The project is scheduled to apply existing technology and be funded through sponsors and private investors.
Few months ago, the company released...
Stephen Hawking's prophecies to come true in 300 years
Sooner or later, mankind will be forced to leave planet Earth – many scientists from different countries of the world share this idea. Reasons for that are plentiful: all kinds of disasters, world wars, etc. The colonization of space seems to be a way out of this situation. Will mankind be able to live on other planets?
People need to escape from the Earth
“Mankind will not be able to...
NASA Discovers Three More Potentially Habitable Alien Worlds
The mission has discovered “two new planetary systems that include three super-Earth-size planets in the ‘habitable zone,’ the range of distance from a star where the surface temperature of an orbiting planet might be suitable for liquid water.”
Five planets are in the Kepler-62 system, and two planets are in the Kepler-69 system. Two planets from the Kepler-62 system–62e and 62f–and one...
Russian president allocates $50 bn to space sector
Russian President Vladimir Putin listens during a live video link with the International Space Station from a construction site of new cosmodrome Vostochny (Eastern) at Eastern Siberia on Friday, April 12, 2013.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a bid to uplift his country’s space industry, has earmarked over $50 billion to Moscow’s space sector.
During a Friday visit to Russia’s new Vostochny...
Gagarin's death: Obvious mystery
Forty-five years ago, on March 27, 1968, during a training flight on a standard fighter, Yuri Gagarin, the first man in history to make a flight into space, was killed. It seems that the official results of the investigation into the death of the cosmonaut were announced long time ago, but various (sometimes very questionable) theories of the tragic event still continue to emerge.
Gagarin’s...
Universe 100 million years older than previous estimates
An image of the anisotropies of the Cosmic microwave background as observed by Planck and released by the European Space Agency on March 21, 2013.
A new study on the radiation leftover from the outset of creation of the universe has revealed that the Big Bang occurred 100 million years earlier than previous estimates around 13.8 billion years ago.
The analysis of the data collected by the European...
God Particle confirmed: CERN says data strongly indicates Higgs boson found
It is now almost certain the subatomic particle that brings together everything in the universe has been found, CERN scientists announced on Thursday. Latest analysis of data from the Large Hadron Collider proves that the Higgs boson actually exists.
The search for the missing particle dubbed as ‘the holy grail of physics,’ which has been going on for almost half a century and has brought the...
Billionaire Funds Manned Mission to Mars in 2018
Astronauts are set to do a fly by of Mars in 2018 in a private spacecraft with limited capacity making the trip rather claustrophobic for some. The craft will also be utilizing technology that turns human waste into a radiation shield to protect the astronauts from dangerous solar radiation.
The mission is funded privately by billionaire Dennis Tito and has somewhat of a twist to it. Tito plans to...
NASA probe detects third radiation belt around Earth
Two giant swaths of radiation, known as the Van Allen Belts, surrounding Earth were discovered in 1958.
Scientists assumed that there were only two radiation rings around the Earth, but a recently-launched NASA probe has detected a new “temporary” belt. As radiation rings pose serious hazards, the finding have implications for future manned flights.
The third belt of radioactive energy particles...
Scientists now know how fast a black hole spins
For the first time ever, scientists have been able to measure the precise spin rate of a ‘supermassive black hole’. The findings will provide some clue as to how some of the most mysterious objects in our universe began to form.
The black hole is located in the NGC 1365 galaxy, located 56 billion light years away from us, and two million times the mass of the Sun.
By its very nature, a...
Star Wars fans raise $380k for Death Star project, aim for more
Sci-Fi fans pushing for the creation of a Star Wars inspired “Death Star” have raised almost US$400,000 on a fundraising site to make it happen. It comes after Washington turned down a petition for its construction, citing astronomical costs.
Undeterred by Washington’s lack of enthusiasm, supporters of the proposed Death Star have generated an account on Kickstarter – a funding platform for...
City Killer Asteroid Will Pass Close To Earth on February 15th
NASA is expected to announce later today that a space rock, capable of wiping out a large city will make a pass of the Earth on 15th February.
The rock, some 35 yards in size will pass at a distance of 17,000 miles from the Earths surface, thats 14 times closer than the moon is to our planet, closer even than many weather satellites in orbit.
The fly by is being called “a record near miss” by...
Solar flare could cause a geomagnetic storm
This particular solar flare was formed on the 23rd of January, according to NASA.
NASA announced this week that a solar flare occurred following a magnetic storm, which occurs when these particles come into contact with the magnetosphere.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA for its acronym in English) reported Friday that a solar flare is traveling to Earth at a speed of about...
Iran sends monkey into space and returns it to Earth safely
The Islamic Republic of Iran has sent a monkey into space on a suborbital flight and returned it to Earth safely.
On Monday, Iran launched the Kavoshgar Pishgam (Pioneer Discoverer) rocket, which took the primate to an altitude of 120 kilometers.
“In this project, we are sending a live animal, a monkey, into space. This kind of monkey’s physiology is very similar to humans. We are [using]...
