376457 Ukraine unrest

At least five people have been killed in an attack against a church in Ukraine’s eastern town of Kirovske as fierce fighting continues between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russian forces.

The artillery attack against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church claimed five lives on Saturday, the church said on Sunday.

Three of the dead were attending a religious service when the shell blasted through the roof of the church.

“The church (in Kirovske) is completely destroyed, three people died,” said a message on the church’s regional website about the attack, adding, “A shell from the same attack hit a hospital, leaving two dead.”

The political unrest in eastern Ukraine has so far claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people, according to figures released by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Nearly 300,000 people have also been forced to flee their homes due to fierce fighting in the east, according to the UN.
